Clinical safety: Use current guidance, local policy and patient-specific judgement.

Explain the central professional decision in Chapter 21. Distinguish the relevant source, evidence and decision-maker. Apply the source-to-evidence-to-action method to a practical SAS scenario. Recognise when current national or local material must be checked before acting.

Section 1

Core reading

Understand the main NHS pension questions that interact with SAS career decisions and prepare accurate records and questions for scheme administrators or individual advisers. This module is a guided companion to Chapter 21 of The SAS Doctors Handbook. It is intentionally shorter than the chapter. Use it to identify the decision you need to make, the evidence that would answer that decision, and the person or process with authority to act. The full chapter should be opened alongside the module for the detailed explanation, examples, national distinctions and source notes. A recurring principle is to avoid asking one document or label to answer a different question. Contract, job plan, appraisal, regulatory status, capability and organisational authority can interact, but they retain different purposes. Where the position is time-sensitive, return to the current operative source before acting. Finish by writing a short action note: the issue; the relevant nation, grade and contract where applicable; the evidence already available; what is missing; who can decide; and the next review point. Do not place confidential patient or employment material into the learning site.
