SAS Week 2026: career, specialist grade, leadership, advocacy and recognition

By ClinicalEdu Editorial Team · Published 2026-09-21

SAS Week 2026 runs from 5–9 October. NHS Employers and the BMA have structured the week around career choice, the specialist grade, SAS leadership, advocacy and recognition of the SAS workforce.

SAS Week 2026 will take place from 5–9 October 2026. NHS Employers is running the week in partnership with the British Medical Association to recognise the contribution of specialty, associate specialist and specialist (SAS) doctors and dentists across the NHS. The national resources are designed to help organisations move beyond a single celebration and use the week to discuss career choice, specialist-grade development, leadership, advocacy and recognition.

A five-day structure for SAS recognition and development

NHS Employers has organised the 2026 communications material around a distinct theme for each day. This gives local organisations a ready-made structure for briefings, teaching sessions, staff stories and leadership conversations.

Resources for organisations

NHS Employers has published a dedicated SAS Week 2026 hub, together with posters, social media material, presentation slides, editable documents and themed icons. A new SAS Week champion network also allows NHS organisations to show their support and appear on an interactive supporter map. These resources make it possible for trusts and health boards to run local activity without having to create all campaign material from scratch.

Resources can be accessed through the NHS Employers SAS Week 2026 hub and the communications resources page.

Why the week matters

For SAS doctors, recognition is important, but the value of SAS Week is greatest when celebration is linked to practical workforce improvement. The 2026 themes provide opportunities to review whether local career structures, job planning, specialist-grade opportunities, leadership roles, mentoring and advocacy arrangements reflect the experience and responsibilities of the SAS workforce.

The timing is also relevant to wider workforce developments. NHS Employers has recently published the SAS eligibility and permanency framework for eligible locally employed doctors and separate guidance on moving LEDs towards substantive contracts. These changes make conversations about sustainable career pathways and appropriate use of SAS grades particularly timely.

Using SAS Week locally

Organisations do not need a large formal programme to participate. A useful local approach might combine visible recognition with one or two practical actions: a discussion with medical leadership about SAS career progression, a specialist-grade information session, a review of access to leadership opportunities, or a meeting between SAS doctors, advocates, tutors and medical workforce teams.

ClinicalEdu will continue to link to national SAS Week material and related workforce guidance. The aim is to help clinicians and organisations use the week as a prompt for sustained development rather than as a stand-alone annual event.
